The Core of my blog is the Improv principle ‘Yes!And’ … this podcast featuring Ben Zander is a match made in heaven! Ben Zander is a conductor, teacher, speaker and co-author of The Art of Possibility. In this podcast he reveals his ‘road to Damascus’, a time when he discovered a new style of leadership. Ben’s message, humour and presence is quite remarkable. I am sure the World Economic Forum will never be the same again. For people in a hurry – listen to the first 6 minutes and you’ll get a taste. For people who want to inspired & nourished – listen to the full 67 minutes. Podcast is here. This cartoon will mean something to those who listen.

My favorite Ben Zander quote about Leadership:

“Who am I being, that my player’s eyes are not shining?”

And now Ben Zander is on TED.

Enjoy

    Hi Geoff,
I had share to a recent experience with someone and thought of this blog!

On Sat. I took my 3 kids to MSO “Kids JAM” session. Not knowing what was about to happen we were asked to bring “instruments” to make music.

As an intro the Conductor said we would look at a piece of music by Dvorjak “A New World” and then perform it at the end of the session. How I thought, kids from 18mth – 15 y.o. were there, instruments were from violins to maracas! What a random set of skills & knowledge the conductor had to work with!

What I saw, was a conductor take us through different stories that some how related to the piece of music, then asked us to make noises that might represent that story – rocket ship taking off or shark sounds? Over the hour we went through maybe 5-6 different stories/sounds.

In the last 1/2 hour we had to put these stories/sound together – we were performing Dvorjak’s “A New World”!

What I saw & learnt was this (i)building of trust- the conductor had confidence & belief in us; (ii) absolute willingness & openness from participants to participate; (iii)a sense of joy & fun – okay to try and not be perfect!

I had a WOW of a time, the kids enjoyed it and I got alot out of observing a “maestro”, put into place an orchestra – or a group of people working together. So I get what Ben Zander says in is lecture – possibilities are there, if we know where to look and inspire them! So many parallels to facilitating the unknown group!

    Cheers,
    Lisa
